LECTURES

Lecture 1

05.04.19 (Week 1)

Today we were briefed about the Module Information Booklet (MIB) and we were given exercise to get used with Adobe Premiere. We combined video clips into one video about one of the Netflix series.

Lecture 2

12.04.19 (Week 2)

For today's class, we were tasked to trim the previous exercise and make the video below 55 seconds. After that, we continued to sound production exercise.

Lecture 3

19.04.19 (Week 3)

For this week's class, we were taught about the various of angles of film and how to use camera and tripod that we borrowed from school.

Lecture 4

26.04.19 (Week 4)

This week, we were doing the shooting exercise again, but now we're doing it in a bigger group. The class was divided into 2 groups and we all have roles such as: producer, director, art director, lighting, sound, etc. We need to make Thailand's story about a couple that just broke up recently and how they still love each other. My group and I got the girls point of view part.

EXERCISES

Exercise 1

05.04.19 (Week 1)

VIDEO PRODUCTION

The videos we were given are video clips that needs to be combine into one good video, because there are sounds of the beginning in shooting such as; "action" and "cut". We wanted to avoid those voices, so we learned how to cut videos, combine them, and familiarized ourselves with the panels.

I took notes when Mr. Martin was explaining how to do the exercise:

  1. Import media to start (all the video, but lastly the original video)
  2. Double click on the video, it will show on top left.
  3. 00:00:27:10 = 27 is seconds, 10 is frames.
  4. Press “i” for in-point. For ex: we don’t want to start it from the beginning, but on 12s. Press “i” and the video will start from 12s.
  5. Press “o” for the ending part that we want to cut.
  6. Drag and drop to the timeline.
  7. Create a new sequence in timeline
  8. There will be ‘green square’ in folder project.
  9. Click the icon view
  10. Whatever we put in our timeline, it will show on the top right screen.
  11. For the next one just click “Insert” or “,” for shortcut key.
  12. Zoom in , Zoom out = buttons below the timeline.
  13. Arrow up and down = to start fro the beginning or at the very end.
After we've done the exercise, we need to show it to Mr. Martin. He said there was no wrong or good this time, so he doesn't really give us feedbacks and just say "ok" or "good". But, if there was something off or odd in our video exercise, he would told us "this part is wrong" and would ask us why. If we answered wrong, he would explained the reason to us.

Fig 1.1
Process of Trimming

Here is the first trimming exercise (55 seconds):

--------------------

We were also tasked to searched for 3 stop motion videos and give the reasons why for our final project:

First video: Whiteboard Illustration

This video tells us about the history of a couple "Cipto and Yulia" from Indonesia before they got married and expressed it by black marker illustration on a whiteboard.

I like this video because the creator made something simple, but in a meaningful way. He illustrates all of the illustrations and make it into a stop motion. The storylines are clear and the motions are well played. The music is also very supporting. What lacks in this video is the language, because not everyone will understand Indonesian language.

Second video : DIY Cardboard House

This video shows us about making a house from cardboards, cut them into different parts, and combined them to make the house.

I really like how people would craft things like this and share it with everyone. You can see how the creator made every parts of the house slowly and one by one, so the audience could know the steps in doing it. By interpreting it in a stop motion video, it makes the house has this "doll house" vibes.  It's such a shame that the lightning and the quality for the video isn't very nice.

Third video: Tokyo Ghoul Figure

*Tokyo Ghoul is a Japanese anime based on the best selling manga "Tokyo Ghoul" created by Sui Ishida. This stop motion video is one of the big event scene in the 2nd season.*

For the last video, I found this one unexpectedly while scrolling in YouTube. When I first look at it, I first was interested in it and tried to open it. But when the video is played, the stop motion really astounds me!

I love anime so much and when it's made in stop motion with all those graphic and sound effects, I really couldn't take my eyes out of it. The motions were made so smooth and the angle of the cameras are perfect. The creator said himself that the only thing that lacks in this video is because of the character figures weren't made so nicely.

--------------------

Here is my idea for the upcoming final project "I Dreamed A Dream":

A girl woke up from the sound of alarm in her bedroom. She gets up from her bed and start preparing to go to school. She was doing her everyday routine at the school; studying, talking with friends, having lunch, and studying again. The school is almost over for the day, she was in a classroom with her head on top of the table, not listening to the teacher. The breeze that afternoon made her feel sleepy. She couldn't resist it and slowly closes her eyes. She didn't see or hear anything. Everything was dark. Then she slowly hears the sound of a clock ticking as if telling her to wake up. When she opens her eyes, she was in her bedroom again! It turns out that everything she has done for today, was all a dream!

Exercise 2

12.04.19 (Week 2)

VIDEO PRODUCTION

For the video lecture, we learned about types of shots in a film.

Video
  1. Extreme Wide Shot (EWS) = geographical shot. Example: In movie Marvel or 2012.
  2. Wide Shot (WS) = entire subject and important objects in surroundings. Example: Classrooms, bars, etc.
  3. Medium Shot (MS) I = to understand what the subject is doing. Gesture and expression visible.
  4. Medium Shot (MS) II
  5. Medium Wide Shot (MWS) = to give balance to the subject and  surroundings.
  6. Medium Close Up (MCU) = midway between waist and shoulders above the head. Example: dialogue, two characters.
  7. Over the Shoulder Shot (O.S) = shows subject behind the shoulder of another person.
  8. Close Up Shot (CU) = isolate most important part of the subject. Emphasises facial expressions or details of an object. For example: Twilight movie, Bella and Edward Close Up.
  9. Extreme Close Up Shot (ECU) = magnifies important detail to give impact to the audience.
  1. Screen Direction - Dynamic Screen Direction = Constant screen travel depicts subject motion in one direction only.
  2. Screen Direction - Static Screen Direction
  3. 2 Shots & Shoulder Shots
Mr. Martin gave us an exercise to screenshot every scenes and explain what kind of shots they are.

This is the video for our exercise:

My part is the first video, which is "Hard Sell". I first played the video, trying to understand the film. Once I'm done, I screenshot every scenes every time they changes. After that, I input the screenshot pictures into the draft Mr. Martin has provided. But since the "Hard Sell" part has mostly repeated scenes, I only picked the different ones.

And this is my work for the second exercise.

Exercise 3

17.05.19 (Week 7)

For this exercise, we were doing colouring exercise of the soap advertisement and for our project 2. Colour correction purpose is to make all scenes consistent in consistent brightness and shadow. Here is the colour preference used for my exercise:

And here is my colour correction exercise final outcome:

Feedback: Mr. Martin said that I have done a good work in the colour correction exercise, because I have made all the scenes in consistent brightness and shadow. I told Mr. Martin there's one scene that was a bit too bright than the others, and Mr. Martin agreed and told me that it shows I have understand how to do this exercise well.

------------------------

SOUND PRODUCTION

For this week's class, we were taught of how to use "Au". We were given one original song, and similar songs but in different tunes, we need to make them all as similar as the original as possible. After that, we were showed how to set a voice but in different voices, such as telephone voices, spaceship voices, stadium spaces, etc.

I took notes how to do it:

Sound Production

  1. Import the files into the Au.
  2. Testing out the meter bar.
  3. When we rise the volume of the sound, the sound visual will cut off and we would want to avoid that.
  4. Identify different frequencies (exercise).
  5. New Document >> named it “Exercise 1”.
  6. In graphic resolution, the resolution is px, while the bit represents the colour.
  7. Put the flat mp3 on the first layer.
  8. “R” is record. For example: recording our voice in the first track. Click the record button so it will be chosen. Press the third button to stop recording.
  9. Equaliser is to alter the frequencies. Equaliser is some kind to make the sound more booming. If we move the equaliser, even just a little bit to the top or below, it will make the sound louder. Modifying it from the base. Every instrument is placed in different parts. So we can choose which one we want to highlight.
  10. Choose the Effect button >> Filter and EQ >> parametric equaliser
  11. Q/Width to make the equaliser wider or narrower.
  12. Preferences >> multitrack >> Track Solo >> Press exclusive solo, click “ok”.

Sounds are measured in dB.
Loudest and lowest meter of sound.
Audio is about exploring. Explore and find out which produce the best sound. We will need good headphones for that.
Exercise: Sounds from telephone and sounds from bathroom, stadium.

  1. Click apply to ensure that whatever we did, will be exported.
  2. Save As or Export File.

EQ3

After this, we were given a task to change a normal sample voice into different kind of voices coming out from different sources.

Fig 1.5
Phone Voice

Feedback:

I’ve tried playing with the sound for the telephones one, and i made one mistake. The sound that I made was too clear. Telephones sound doesn’t have a pure clear voice, but there’s some kind of hissing behind it. So, the “H” in the equaliser needs to be turned down to add more hiss to the voice.

Fig 1.6
Bathroom Voice

I was having difficulties in adjusting the EQ for the bathroom voice, since I couldn't really find the sound I wanted. Since it was hard to have echo for the sound, I tried to make it as natural as possible with a little bit of echo behind the voice.

Fig 1.7
Stadium Voice

For the stadium voice, I made it with more hissing and echoes than the phone voice, because the sound I pictured of stadium is loud, but somehow still clear with a little bit of hissing behind it. Stadium voice was also quite challenging for me.

Exercise 3

19.04.19 (Week 3)

For this week, we were told to trim the seniors' work of romance hard sell into 45 seconds sharp.

Fig 1.5
Process of Trimming

And here is my final work:

--------------------

After doing this exercise, we did shooting exercise and my group's name is Shazam. I worked on this exercise with my other friends: Chiquita, Katarina, Maydeline, and Tamara. We are supposed to follow the shooting according to these pictures below. This exercise was to help us get familiar with using camera and tripod, also to understand how film scenes works.

Fig 1.8
Shooting Exercise 1

Fig 1.9
Shooting Exercise 2

After we're done with the shooting, we needed to trim each scene into 3 seconds and mention the explanations of the angles. Here is my final work:

SOUND PRODUCTION

Exercise 4

26.04.19 (Week 4)

For this week's exercise, we were showed how to use equaliser, layering, pitch, stretch, and inverse/reverse. For the first task, we need to edit an explosion sound.

Fig 2.0
Editing Explosion Sound with Equaliser

Fig 2.1
Editing Explosion Sound with Stretch and Pitch

We also did exercise in changing normal voice into monster voice:

Fig 2.2
Monster Voice

Even though monsters voice are supposed to be heavy and loud, but I think that it should also sounds clear as well. If not, how are the audiences going to understand what the monster is saying?

Exercise 5

24.05.19 (Week 7)

For the next exercise, it's actually should have been done in week 4, but the whole class didn't know that we were supposed to work on it. So, Mr. Razif told us to work on it immediately, because the other class has done it, but we haven't.

I searched for the sound effects in https://freesound.org/ and combine all the sounds I've found in Adobe Audition, then combine the video and the sound in Adobe Premiere Pro.

Feedback: Mr. Razif said it's not bad, and maybe I could make the blast sound more impactful, because that is the most important part.
