FINAL PROJECT (Week 11 - Week 14)

07.11.18 (Week 11)

We were given instructions for our final project and that was to make an A3 poster about problems only in campus community. We were allowed to use one more colour other than black and white.

I chose my problem "No Food and Drink in the Classroom".

I had pictured what I wanted to do with my final project, so I just digitalised them all in Adobe Illustrator.

14.11.18 (Week 12)

I tried to digitalised them in Adobe Illustrator, but it seems that the result wasn't quite satisfying.

21.11.18 (Week 13)

Before week 13, I kept asking for feedbacks on my poster.

Fig 1.3
Procrastinate Poster (2nd Attempt)

I thought about this one and I want to tell the people not to be lazy and procrastinate. But Mr. Vinod said that the composition is bad and how does this reflect procrastination? And from there, I knew I should figure out other ideas.

Fig 1.4
3rd Attempt Posters

It was quite hectic, I kept looking at the preferences of the styles that I want to make and kept asking for feedbacks. But then, I think it turns out that I was aiming blindly, because I don't know what to do. And there weren't good enough.

Fig 1.5
4th Attempt Posters

I kept making another one, until I decided that this would be what I wanted to show the people. I made these words by looking at preferences in Google and I arranged the words and put them together. But when I asked for feedbacks, it's also not good enough.

Fig 1.6
5th Attempt Poster

Tomorrow was already class, so I thought about making something simple first and will try to improve it in class with feedbacks from the lecturers. Never thought that Mr. Vinod will like the style I put in it. But this one was too digitalised. And the blank spaces around it, makes the poster looks weird. Also the words doesn't make sense.

Fig 1.7
Ransom Notes Preferences

At week 13's class, I don't know why, but Mr. Vinod kind of told me to change my style into "ransom notes". It really made me confused, because I never make any ransom notes before, especially in typography which makes this very challenging for me.

Fig 1.8
Sketch of 1st Attempt Ransom Notes (6th Attempt Poster)

Started making a sketch and apply it in Adobe Illustrator, but then Mr. Vinod doesn't like it and he said back to the original one. I think he saw me really stress and he helped me out in arranging the words.

Fig 1.9
7th Attempt Poster

Mr. Vinod arranged the words that more looked like a ransom notes and he told me to do the rest. I tried doing it, but it seems it doesn't really look like ransom notes, yet. Mr. Vinod told me to keep researching and analyse it.

Fig 2.0
8th Attempt Poster

I tried to look at preferences like "God Save the Queen" band, posters of ransom notes, and all other things like Mr. Vinod asked me to. I received feedback that this looks better than before, but still needs to improve.

Fig 2.1
9th Attempt Poster

I tried to come up with another ideas in making the ransom notes poster with the references Mr. Vinod gave me. Mr. Vinod said that I have chosen the correct expression or transformation and I should use it. However, the words weren't reflecting "ACT" and Mr. Vinod gave me the sentence for me to work on.

Fig 2.2
10th Attempt Poster

This was the sentence that Mr. Vinod gave me. I think I have done this just fine, because he didn't complain of the style that I used. So I assume that I'm on correct path. But, the islands of text doesn't interact or interplay with each other.

Fig 2.3
Final Outcome Poster

And this is the final outcome of my poster. I have tried to make the words interact with each other by not dividing them and putting them in readable composition.

Fig 2.4

I thought since it's ransom notes, I tried to make the letters and papers shaky or jiggling a little bit to make it look simple but shows how ransom notes are in my style.

FEEDBACK

Week 12

General Feedback: We were supposed to sketch out our ideas on a paper and then start digitalising later. We are allowed to use one more colour other than black and white. We should have look at the preferences provided in the module : https://www.pinterest.com/achoong2001/typography-final-project/

Specific Feedback: My words were too boring and not interesting at all. The expression was terrible, too. "Why chose this problem of all problems?" Mr. Vinod even asked me that. He told me to look at the Pinterest link and tried to sketch my poster first, because I digitalised them without even sketching.

Week 13

General Feedback : If we have done our poster, animate it. And if we done with everything, print it the poster and put it on a frame.

Specific Feedback : Mr. Vinod said I'm almost there. He asked me to do the ransom notes, but I still have to improve my ransom notes. I haven't get the word "good", or "okay" or "fine", yet so I'm still in the area of "almost succeeded".

Online Feedback:

Mr. Shamsul's:

3rd Attempt Posters: Where do you get all the wording. But I'm not sure about the message. Not clear.

4th Attempt Posters : The arrangement is still not that exciting. Alignment is still off a bit. The second option is no no... Messy. When you use the outline of the text, it becomes not interesting.. The arrangement makes it not interesting. You learn principle of design right? Apply that in your design.

8th Attempt Poster : This looking better than before.

Mr. Vinod's:

2nd Attempt Poster: The shape you have created does not sit well against the background space. The composition is bad. How does this reflect procrastination??? Just like in the type expression exercise, there must be an inherent twist/idea embedded using type to express and convey the message. GO BACK TO SKETCHES.Analyse the references given in the link. Deconstruct it. Apply what is learned.

5th Attempt Poster: That sentence? Where did you get it? Makes no sense towards the end. The style of typo is good but you need to try and fill white spaces by rearranging the text.

8th Attempt Poster: Background is too disturbing. There is too much space between the text. You are not interpreting the ransom style effectively.

Fig 2.4
References from Mr. Vinod

Only pay attention to the ransom notes sections. Ignore the visuals. Apply.

9th Attempt Poster: Ransom notes style is generally used when the message is a call to action, to 'rebel' like message. It's punk! So if the message is call to 'ACT! Call to rebel against the norm then it is correct style to use. The message you are using is now is not really revealing or a call to act. The earlier style you had where you had normal text transforming into abnormal was correct expression. Use that transformation. Work hard and be a success; work harder and be a rebel.

10th Attempt Poster: Islands of text that don't interact or interplay with each other.

REFLECTION

EXPERIENCES

07.11.18 (Week 11)

I couldn't think of anything beside smoking problems in E-learning week. So I haven't started out yet.

14.11.18 (Week 12)

When Mr. Vinod saw my hideous poster, he told me to look at the references and I might know what to do now. First of all, I have to sketch my ideas and then digitalised it. I was in a hurry because when I heard that this poster will be animated, I felt really stressed out. I will try to make a simple one, but could convey my message through the poster.

21.11.18 (Week 13)

It was really, really, really stressful thinking about what to do with this final project. Even though Mr. Vinod and Mr. Shamsul already helped me the best they can, my only best feedback was "almost there".

OBSERVATIONS

07.11.18 (Week 11)

I observed a lot of posters, but none of them seemed to match what I was going to make. I had difficult times in deciding what problem and how should I express it.

14.11.18 (Week 12)

Now that I had been given feedbacks and look around my friend's works and Pinterest preferences, I might know what to make for my final project poster.

21.11.18 (Week 13)

I saw the others already animating their works and I'm still stuck on my poster designing. I'm really panicked and worried I might not pass the final project.

FINDINGS

07.11.18 (Week 11)

I only found posters with illustrations and not with sentence expressions or paragraph expressions. Most of them were cheerful or positive posters, not the negative ones. The negative ones were already mainstreamed and not really interesting for me.

14.11.18 (Week 12)

I found out that I should follow the Pinterest link and try to have research and sketches to improve than before.

21.11.18 (Week 13)

I found out about some interesting things when I learned about ransom notes. Even though it's really hard in applying it, but I have fun. And I gain some knowledge and experience in making ransom notes.
