Final Project - Billboard Study

_________________________________________________________________________________

For this project, we were told to make illustrations with billboards as inspirations. We needed to find billboards all around us and sketch what we had in mind. The billboards are just for inspirations, not until to the point where we have to make something precise as the billboards shows us. Ms. Sherry told us to think outside the box!

For a start, I tried to find billboards. And I've got many of them.

Billboards at Indonesia

There was a holiday week for students or you can say "E-Learning Week". I used that time to went home to my hometown, Indonesia. There's not really much to see because I'm not really interested in most of the billboards in Indonesia.

Billboards at Malaysia Airport

These are the billboards that I took at the airport when the E-Learning Week was over and back to Malaysia. Although most of the billboards are about fashion, foods, illustrations, etc, but it's interesting to see. Those billboards decorated the airport.

These are the photos that I took on the way back home from the airport. There were so many of them and I just couldn't stop snapping pictures.

Billboard at Sunway Pyramid

And this is the last photo of the billboards that I took, because I think I have enough. It's not actually a billboard and I took this from a store at Sunway Pyramid. But I got lured by the illustrations and how they've put up together. It really reminds me of design principle.

After I explored the billboards that I took, I finally come up to a conclusion that the billboards that I found are all about what's happening now. They're showing us that this is the world now. We live in millenial time. And that's how I come up with idea of my billboards; "The Era of 2018".

My Sketch of Final Project

This is my sketch of the billboards with the theme "2018". I planned to make them surrounding the little girl at the centre as if it's how she perceives the world around her. And it's how I see the world now. There are lots of elements; fame, fashion, cosmetics, accessories, music, technologies, entertainments, nature, city of the worlds, etc. Some of them weren't from the billboards pictures that I took, but since Ms. Sherry wants me to think outside the box, then here I am.

Feedback: Ms. Sherry said it's interesting of how I put them all together. She asked what medium I will take and I explained to her that I'll be doing it in watercolour. I was going to glue some paper and make the paper bigger, but then I wasn't allowed. "No more than A3 paper." was what Ms. Sherry said.

My Sketch of Final Project (2)

These were my sketches and you can see some parts where I added more papers. Some people may see it weird, but I see it as something exciting. Putting papers on top of other papers and continue the sketching and colourings. It's so much fun to do and it's also challenging.

The Coloured Final Project

After I make a line art with black ink drawing pen, I coloured them in watercolour on watercolour paper.

Feedback : This is beautiful in areas but I must admit the type is not very nice. Perhaps you can scan and then work on the computer. Or, added more sections of paper that would cover the type and use only your painting. You have so many really beautiful areas to the painting but the type is not matching and because it is surrounded by white is standing out more than your watercolours. Also, it doesn’t make sense to put your name and date in the middle of this. An artist might sign very small in a corner but a designer doesn’t sign their work.

That said, I tried to figure out what to do to erase the typefaces I add on the paper. I open my Adobe Photoshop and started to edit my final project.

Feedback: Yeah. Much better. What do you thjink? The middle looks a little empty but overall much better.
